C-TOOLS and Browser Configuration

C-TOOLS has been designed and tested to work with a wide range of browser types and versions. If you are using a popular browser such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, Safari, Firefox or Mozilla, C-TOOLS should work for you. For Internet Explorer and Netscape, C-TOOLS requires version 4 or higher. C-TOOLS works on most operating system versions including Windows '98, Windows 2000, Mac OS/X, and Linux. C-TOOLS does not work well on Mac OS 9 computers.

This document describes what must be configured on your browser in order for C-TOOLS to work. A principle requirement is that your browser must be configured to support java. In general, you need to be using a reasonably modern browser that supports, and is configured to run, JDK 1.1 or higher.

Browser Requirements

Whether or not you are using Internet Explorer, Netscape or another web browser application, C-TOOLS requires three features to be enabled:

#1 Java [Test my browser] [Instructions]
#2 Cookies [Test my browser] [Instructions]
#3 Javascript [Test my browser] [Instructions]

Microsoft Windows

C-TOOLS works on all known modern Microsoft operating systems (95/98/2000/NT/XP) and modern browsers (i.e. Netscape 4.1 or greater, Internet Explorer 5 or greater).

Macintosh

If you are using a Macintosh computer, C-TOOLS works best on an Internet Explorer browser and the Mac OS X operating system. (Mozilla and Safari also work well on Mac OS X.)

[CAUTION] Netscape browsers generally have a weak implementation of java on the Macintosh platform.

[CAUTION] Mac OS 9 is not recommended for C-TOOLS.

Linux

On linux systems, Netscape has historically been known to crash when delivering java applets. You are encouraged to use the Mozilla browser. To enable java on Mozilla, you should enter commands similar to:

cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
ln -s /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.0_01/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so .

The java runtime environment for linux is available from http://java.sun.com/. Specific URLS include http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/download-linux.html and http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/install-linux.html, though you may prefer to use 1.4.

As an alternative, smaller jre RPMs might be available from http://rpmfind.net/. You are encouraged to use the java runtime engine version 1.3 or higher.

Other notes

[CAUTION] C-TOOLS does not work well with the Opera browser or the HotJava browser.
